Thomas Kaufman, author of the new detective novel, Steal the Show, gave this tip at a recent booksigning: Turn off your monitor when you’re writing your novel. When you’re not looking at your words as they appear on your screen, you’ll be more likely to get into the flow and stay in character.

I don’t type well enough to do this! I am afraid I would spend hours deciphering my typos. Of course, indecipherable typing might still be an improvement. I love the idea though… staying in character and not stopping for every little typo. But to turn off the monitor? I would be afraid my hands would shift on the keyboard and I would end i[ yu[omh ;olr yjod@
